Death: There’s an app for that

Homework, bars, school, friends, tanning, hair appointments, death.

Death isn’t something most millenials plan for. But, a new app on Facebook aims to change this. Ifidie.net takes my concept of social media as a virtual graveyard to a post-mortem level.

In a promotional video the narrator says:

“You’re probably thinking to yourself, ‘I don’t remember scheduling an appointment with death anytime soon.’ And, you’re right. But so is death, right around the corner, so don’t wait until it’s too late, leave your message today.”

The revolutionary app enables users to post final messages to Facebook friends in either text or video format. After installing the app, users must choose three trustees, who bear the responsibility of confirming their death when it happens. Read the rest of this entry »

Facebook misused for soliciting hit-men

Let’s pretend for a moment…

It’s Monday, and Lynn, a 28 year-old, finds herself irritable, working tirelessly staring at the blank grey walls of her cubicle at the same entry level job she’s had since college graduation. Her self-esteem bottomed out this morning when she stepped on the scale, and her boyfriend never came home the night before.

As she procrastinates from the never-ending to-do list her boss slapped on her desk at 8 a.m., she peers over the short cubicle walls, hoping no one will catch her Facebook stalking the woman she’s almost certain Chris, her boyfriend of four years, continues to see on the side.

The elephant in the room. They’d discussed her before, and Chris stared at her with his big sea-foam blue eyes that got her each and every time, promising her that it was just a phase, and it was over.

“Maybe it’s time I take it into my own hands,” Lynn thinks to herself. “Impossible. Where would I even begin?”

Scrolling through her social media accounts, an idea springs to Lynn’s mind. If Chris can meet her online, maybe I can find away to finish her off online.

“Using Facebook, I’m sure I can find someone to do the deed for me,” Lynn sneers at the thought and begins her conquest.

After reading that you might feel creeped out, maybe even have goose bumps. The good news, that story is fictional. The bad news is that it’s not the only story of its kind. This week in Cleveland authorities caught a woman soliciting hit-men on a Facebook page to kill people wearing fur. Read the rest of this entry »
